Disgraceful act: took advantage of a blind man's disability, offered him assistance on the stairs - and stole his money. After searching, the suspect was arrested by police officers at the Lev Habira police station in Jerusalem and brought to court on Monday for an extension of his detention.
The police received a report yesterday afternoon from a security guard at a bank branch in Jerusalem about a suspicious person who stole a large sum of money from a bank customer who withdrew his money and left the branch. The investigation into which the police officers who were called to the scene began revealed that the victim and his friend, both blind men using a guide pole, withdrew thousands of shekels in money from the bank branch.

After they left the branch, the suspect approached them, allegedly showed exemplary citizenship and offered them help going down the stairs. During the "courteous" assistance, the suspect allegedly cunningly took an envelope placed in one of them's bag containing their money and fled the scene.
During searches as part of the investigation, the suspect was located in the evening. He was arrested and taken for interrogation at the Lev HaCapital police station.
The suspect, a resident of Jerusalem in his 50s, was brought before the court this morning, which granted the request of the police representative and extended his detention for several days, until Thursday.
The investigations and intelligence officer at the Lev HaBira police station, Deputy Commissioner Lior Ben-Shalom, said: "This is a serious act of theft, all the more so when the suspect took advantage of a person's disability under the guise of aid, during which he took the best of his money from the innocent citizen's possession. As soon as the report was received, efforts were made to locate him quickly in order to bring him to justice and in the hope that we would get our hands on the large sum of money in order to return him to the civilian. To this end, the police officers acted with determination – patrol, detective, investigation and intelligence, until the arrest of the suspect."
