Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Monday in a meeting with Omani Sultan Haitham bin Tareq that Tehran welcomes better diplomatic relations with Egypt. This is according to local media.
This is not a declaration about renewing relations, but it comes against the backdrop of reports in Iran of a desire to renew diplomatic relations with Egypt and reopen embassies in both countries.
Relations between Cairo and Tehran have officially broken since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, but there has been some improvement in recent times, with Egypt facilitating Iranian tourism.
The Omani sultan visited Cairo earlier this month to discuss the issue with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. The Omani sultan's visit to Iran lasted two days and began earlier this week with additional issues on the agenda. Over the weekend, a prisoner exchange deal brokered by Oman between Iran and Belgium was launched. Oman is also mediating between the sides in the war in Yemen.
