Despite his 90 years, the physician Prof. Dr. Hans-Beat Hadorn does not think about cutting back. He has already made important discoveries.

Wolfratshausen – "I'm healthy, but I'm 90." For Prof. Dr. Hans-Beat Hadorn, former paediatrician and university lecturer, the latter fact is no reason to cut back a little. Until 1998 he was both full professor of pediatrics and director of the pediatric clinic of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich (Dr. von Haunersches Children's Hospital). He paid particular attention to research – even today.

He was born on 13 May 1933 in Oberdiessbach (Switzerland) as the son of the developmental biologist and geneticist Ernst Hadorn. "I come from a family of scholars," he says today. He studied medicine in Zurich and received his doctorate with a thesis on biochemical genetics. In 1966/77 he won a scholarship that took him to Melboure, followed by a stay at the "Institute for Experimental Embryology at the College de France" in Paris.

He habilitated in paediatrics, became an associate professor at the University of Bern in 1971 and took over as head of paediatric gastroenterology at the University Children's Hospital there. Seven years later, he became chairman of the children's clinic in Graz. "And then came Munich," he says of his eventful, but above all meritorious life. "Even then, the company was very international. My Swiss accent wasn't even noticeable. The main thing was that you were qualified."

He has already made important discoveries - even in retirement, a Wolfratshausen physician continues his research

One of Hadorn's greatest successes is the discovery of a defect in bicarbonate secretion in cystic fibrosis. A step forward that triggered a major rethink in all areas in this regard.

But there is another Hans-Beat Hadorn. He is a member of the Refudocs, which took care of the medical care of the refugees arriving in Munich. And Hadorn can look back on a vocal degree. He is still a member of "MünchenKlang", an ensemble of choir and orchestra. Only in April of this year they had a big concert in the Herkulessaal in Munich. "It was a great success," says the father of three – he is married for the second time – and grandfather of a granddaughter, letting his voice sink into the bass range. A second great hobby is painting. "I have a small studio in Geretsried," he says, pointing to the large-format paintings in his living room. "They're mine." Against this background, Deputy Mayor Günter Eibl was quite right with his birthday present. He presented the jubilarian with the book "Painterly Heritage between Isar and Loisach".

Hans-Beat Hadorn celebrated his birthday surrounded by his family. "With a specialty, of course: Zurich sliced meat." For this, the birthday girl himself stood in the kitchen. "I've refined the recipe," says the 90-year-old, laughing. "There's a trick that simply improves the taste. But what exactly that is, I won't tell you now."
