At Least 16 Killed, Dozens Wounded in Shootings Over Memorial Day Weekend

The wave of gun violence that bleeds the United States also did not let up this Memorial Day weekend: multiple shootings in different states left at least 16 dead and dozens injured.

There were shootings in at least eight states over the weekend at beaches, high schools and even motorcycle events. The ages of the fatalities ranged from 16 to more than 60.

One of the first shootings of the weekend was recorded Friday afternoon by Telemundo Chicago cameras, which recorded the confrontation between two groups gathered on Chicago's North Avenue Beach.

Although no injuries were reported in that shooting, eight people were killed and more than 30 wounded in other shootings that occurred in Chicago this weekend, according to NBC Chicago.

And in other states of the country there were also reports of fatal shootings.

In Baltimore, Maryland, around 3:30 p.m. on Friday, an argument between two men led to a shooting that left five injured, authorities confirmed to NBC News.

The five people who were shot have not been identified. The victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison. Police are still searching for the suspect, according to NBC News affiliate WBAL-TV.

In Mesa, Arizona, police arrested 20-year-old Iren Byers in connection with multiple shootings that occurred between Friday night and early Saturday morning, according to a news release from the Mesa Police Department. Byers is accused of killing four people and wounding another, according to police. It was not immediately clear if Byers had an attorney.

The victim who was injured in Mesa, a 36-year-old woman, was in stable condition but will require surgery, police spokeswoman Detective Brandi George said.

Byers was jailed on four counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder, according to a news release. He is being held without bail, according to the document.

On Saturday, police responded to the Roxbury Lanes Casino in Seattle, Washington, after receiving reports that shots had been fired inside. Three people were injured, according to NBC News affiliate KOMO, but the severity of the injuries was not immediately clear. As of Monday morning, police had yet to apprehend any suspects.

In Red River, New Mexico, a suspect was taken into custody after three people were killed and five wounded, including the alleged gunman, who opened fire Saturday night during a motorcycle event. On Sunday, police identified the victims as Anthony Silva, 26, of Los Lunas; Randy Sanchez, 46, of Albuquerque; and Damian Breaux, 46, of Socorro.

Police identified the alleged attacker as Jacob David Castillo, 30, of Rio Rancho. Castillo was wounded in the shooting and was hospitalized. He will be booked into the Taos County Detention Center upon his release, police said. Castillo could not immediately be reached for comment.

Three people were wounded, two seriously, in Garden Grove, California, on Saturday night in a shooting at the Hot Restaurant and Lounge. Garden Grove Police Sgt. Nick Jensen said the gunman argued before opening fire, NBC Los Angeles reported.

"There was some kind of altercation, so it wasn't someone who came out of nowhere on the street, there was an altercation and the suspect pulled out a gun and shot three victims," Jensen said.

Customers detained the suspected gunman until officers arrived at the restaurant. Although the suspect was initially detained by police, it was not immediately clear if he had been arrested and charged with any crime. Neither the suspect nor the victims have been identified by police.

In the early hours of Sunday morning in Atlanta, Georgia, a teenager was killed and another wounded in a shooting during an "unauthorized gathering" at Benjamin E. Mays High School, according to a statement from Atlanta Public Schools.

Police were called to the high school Sunday around 2:30 a.m. Officers discovered a 16-year-old girl and a <>-year-old teenager who had been shot. The girl later died from her injuries. The boy was transported to a nearby hospital in stable condition.

Authorities identified the deceased as Breasia Powell, according to NBC News affiliate WXIA-TV. The Fulton County medical examiner did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Around 11:45 a.m. ET Sunday, one person was killed during a shooting at the Navy Yard Green Line train station in Washington, D.C., the Metropolitan Transit Police tweeted.

"Unfortunately, despite measures to save his life, the adult male victim was pronounced dead at the scene," police said in the tweet.

The shooter and victim got into a fight on the train, according to Deputy Police Chief Andre Wright. Wright said the victim suffered "multiple gunshot wounds" to the upper body.
