The countdown is on for the Puls-Open-Air 2023. From 8 to 10 June, 45 bands, solo artists and DJs will perform on the grounds of Kaltenberg Castle. After the chaos of last year, when the open air had to be cancelled, everything should run smoothly again this year with a new organizer.
Kaltenberg – It is particularly important to the organizers to make the festival sustainable and inclusive. To ensure that the expected 12,000 visitors do not produce mountains of waste, there will be no more disposable cups this year. For the first time, garbage is separated at the campsite. There is a market with breakfast offerings, a zero-waste shop and a vending machine kiosk. The electricity on the site is to come entirely from renewable sources, including Kaltenberg's own solar park.
Sustainability in the festival industry
Much of the dining on offer for visitors, artists and crew members will be vegetarian or vegan this year. "And the products are also purchased regionally," says Markus Wiegand, press spokesman for Ritterturnier Kaltenberg Veranstaltungs-GmbH. The measures are intended to support a change in the entire festival industry towards more sustainability.
Awareness team helps with problems
Inclusion is also a top priority. In order to prevent discrimination, assaults and bullying, a so-called awareness team will be on the premises. The team consists of seven members, who are recognizable by high-visibility vests. They intervene in conflicts and can be called in to help in difficult situations. Director Elnaz Amiraslani thinks, for example, of "sexist incidents, stupid looks or comments, attacks on women, queer or trans people".
For guests with learning or reading difficulties, a translator for easy language is available. In addition, visitors with physical disabilities are supported, for example with tent construction or catering. "Because not all food and drink stalls are barrier-free," says Amiraslani.
Larger grounds, chilled atmosphere
Markus Wiegand promises "a very chilled festival with a high quality of stay". The site has been enlarged and the stage layout has been restructured. The decoration will be more elaborate than before. There will be plenty of space to celebrate and exchange ideas, as well as "adventure islands and chill zones," as Wiegand says. Workshops are also offered on the site.
Security service of the Kaltenberg Knights' Games takes over
This year, for the first time, Ritterturnier Kaltenberg Veranstaltungs-GmbH is not only providing the grounds, but is also the organizer of the open air organized by Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR). Particular attention is paid to the issue of security. A bankruptcy like last year, when the festival had to be cancelled after the first day due to problems with the security staff, should not be repeated.

Ticket exchange instead of refund
This year, the security service will be used, which has also been in charge of the knights' games for years. "The staff has the best local knowledge and experience in connection with this special event site," says Heinrich von Bayern, Managing Director of Ritterturnier Kaltenberg Veranstaltungs-GmbH.
Visitors affected by the cancellation had the opportunity to get free tickets for this year. According to Markus Wiegand, about 8000 people have made use of it. "That was an action by BR so as not to leave people out in the rain." Because with the reimbursement of the ticket prices by the former organizer, it probably looks bad.
Only day tickets are still available
The tickets for the camping and motorhome site are now sold out. For last-minute visitors, however, there are still day tickets available. For more information, please visit pulsopenair.de.
