IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevy recently commented to intelligence officials about the over-glorification of the Radwan Force, Hezbollah's elite unit, and instructed to take advantage of the force's weak points, the difficulty in maintaining secrecy, Walla learned Monday.

Halevy made the remarks at a conference held about a week and a half ago at the Northern Command, marking an in-depth study of Hezbollah's elite force. Senior commanders from the IDF's spearhead divisions and other forces were invited to the conference to join them just before a very deep maneuver into villages in southern Lebanon. Among other things, it discussed the possibility of hitting communities near the fence with short-range rockets with a warhead weighing hundreds of kilograms.

During the seminar, reviews were given by senior commanders, including senior officials from the Military Intelligence Research Division. Among other things, staged films were screened to illustrate the Radwan Force's capabilities in defense and offense, weapons and methods of operation, including barrages of short-range and heavy rockets causing significant destruction to buildings and infrastructure, infiltrating communities, attempted abduction, killing, barricading and blocking roads.

According to sources in the 36th Division, the chief of staff, who took the stage immediately after the videos were screened, commented on the content to the film producers at the outset and warned against "over-glorifying" Hezbollah forces, especially the Radwan force. Halevi, who in the past also served as commander of the Galilee Division and head of Military Intelligence, is very knowledgeable about the development of Hezbollah's force buildup over the years.

Military sources addressed Halevy's remarks from the podium and stressed that the chief of staff does not underestimate the capabilities of the Radwan force, which is Hezbollah's main force. According to them, Halevy wanted to emphasize that alongside the risks, the opportunities created by the erroneous conduct of the Radwan force must be exploited. The chief of staff believes that the fact that the unit has grown makes it difficult for it to maintain secrecy, and the IDF must take advantage of this.

Military sources who interpreted Halevy's remarks said that the size of the Radwan force increases its exposure, makes it much more cumbersome and forces it to rely on heavy tools. This fact allows the IDF to surprise it with an attack, to significantly harm it in the event of an infiltration into Israeli territory, and to ensure that any combatant who crossed the border will not return to Lebanon.

Northern Command Commander Maj. Gen. Uri Gordin also emphasized in preparation for the conference that "our first task is to study the enemy with whom we are expected to fight defensively and offensively. Not to glorify it and not to diminish it - but to know it. The second is to learn how we prepare for it, and to become deeply familiar with the capabilities and techniques required of us in order to meet our two basic imperatives: defense and winning the war."

Just this past week, the Radwan Force carried out two showcase exercises, in which it demonstrated operational capabilities using a variety of weapons and capabilities to penetrate into Israeli territory. The IDF attributes this to the pressure and tension in which the organization finds itself, fearing that Israel will attack Lebanon by surprise.
