Former Supreme Court Justice Jacob Turkel has died at the age of 88. Turkel served for a decade as a Supreme Court justice from 2005 to 1995. Among other things, he stood for eight years until 2018 as chairman of the Advisory Committee for the Appointment of Senior Civil Service Officials, known as the Turkel Commission.
He also served as head of the commission of inquiry into the Mavi Marmara flotilla incidents in 2010. The committee headed by it determined that the soldiers of the flotilla acted reasonably and that Israel acted in accordance with international law. In addition, the committee headed by Turkel criticized the political and military echelons for not anticipating the violence that might develop.
His first judicial position was as a magistrate judge in the Beer Sheva court in 1967. Seven years later he was promoted to judge in the Beer Sheva District Court, and in 1981 was appointed President of the Court, a position he held for 14 years, until his appointment as a Supreme Court justice.
Turkel's position on the legal revolution was complex. He expressed opposition to changes in the Judicial Selection Committee and the independence of the Attorney General, but he did not rule out passing an override clause limiting the Supreme Court's ability to strike down laws only by a certain majority.
