Christian Bläul is one of the best-known climate activists of the "Last Generation". Statements about the raid show what makes the physicist tick.

Dresden/Munich - On Wednesday morning (May 24), a nationwide raid set the climate protest scene in turmoil. In seven federal states, investigators searched the business premises and homes of activists of the "Last Generation". Also in Saxony. That's where Christian Bläul lives. He is one of the country's best-known activists. He takes a relaxed view of the raid.

According to his own statements, Bläul is now a "full-time climate glue". The 41-year-old worked as a software developer until recently. He didn't earn badly, but at some point he "felt bad because of his colleagues," he told the Tag24 portal. That's why he quit his job and applied for unemployment benefits. "It also gives me more time for activism."

Climate activist Christian Bläul undeterred by raid: "I would go back to prison for the climate"

Bläul has been a member of the protest group "Extinction Rebellion" since 2019, and later joined the "Last Generation". The physicist was already in prison in Sweden because of his protest. Last summer, he was detained in Stockholm for 16 days for sticking himself to a road and blocking it. But that doesn't deter him from further activities.

"I would go back to prison for the climate," Bläul told Bild at the time. Presumably, even attacks by angry motorists against "climate glue", as recently in Dresden, would not rein him in. According to his own statements, fines against him are said to amount to more than 25,000. He hasn't paid yet.

Climate activist Bläul ridicules raid against "Last Generation": "I expected it"

He takes a relaxed view of the raid against himself and the "Last Generation". "I've been expecting it and I've been preparing for it for months," Bläul apparently told saechsische.de with a smile. The investigators had found him in the apartment of his girlfriend. Then they went to his apartment together. The 41-year-old had apparently returned from vacation shortly before the access.

There, officers confiscated his cell phone, two laptops and a box full of documents. His own website, as well as that of the "Last Generation", was shut down for the time being. But the climate activist group has already launched a new website.

Climate glue Bläul: "Last generation" a criminal organization "legally untenable"

The search, about which the "Last Generation" explained itself at a questionable press conference, he described only as annoying. "My commitment to the climate is not stored on any computer. No one can take that away from me. No matter how many more house searches are coming." Bläul doubts that the investigators could actually have collected incriminating material.

What bothers the activist most is that the "Last Generation" is portrayed as a criminal organization, even though there has been no trial yet. This is "legally untenable in no way" and "completely absurd". The accusation will now circulate for a while "and then vanish into thin air," Bläul believes. (mt)
