Munich - After a long dry spell, it is finally getting really spring-like in Germany - without rain and with lots of sun. In the week of Pentecost it could even be summery. Meteorologists expect temperatures of up to 30 degrees. So it's the best weather forecast for us, but further south in Europe there is also the threat of strong storms: In Spain and Italy, up to 200 litres of rain per square metre could fall.

After a slightly cooler Wednesday, temperatures in Germany will rise successively until the Whitsun weekend, says meteorologist Jan Schenk of The Weather Channel. 20 to 25 degrees Celsius are then to be expected, on the Upper Rhine the thermometer could even climb up to 29 degrees.

Weather in Germany: First heat wave of the year is in the starting blocks

But from the middle of next week, the temperatures will be taken up a notch. "Southeast winds set in and with it very warm to hot air from the Black Sea region comes to Central Europe. Temperatures will rise to a good 30 degrees by the end of the week," Schenk writes on weather.com. In all likelihood, this air should provide at least 30 degrees for three consecutive days. This would give Germany the first heat wave of the year. The only thing that is still unclear is where exactly the Black Sea air hits the Federal Republic.

While Hoch Vera brings bathing weather in some federal states just in time for the holiday season, there is a threat of strong storms in southern Europe. Spain and Italy, for example, are already plagued. While Spain is groaning under a historic drought and then had to cope with storms, Italy has recently experienced devastating floods that even killed several people.

New storms possible in holiday destinations: Heavy rain announced in Spain and Italy

Although the inhabitants of the Iberian holiday regions of Spain and Portugal are likely to look forward to precipitation in the week of Pentecost, there is a risk of flooding because the soils are extremely dry due to the prolonged drought. Because it's supposed to rain a lot: Locally, it could be up to 200 liters per square meter, says Schenk.

Italy is also threatened by bad weather: according to forecasts, it could rain just as much in the Alpine regions. As a result, northern Italy was threatened with a new wave of flooding. The people there are still struggling with the consequences of the recent floods. To make matters worse, since the soils are still wet from the heavy rainfall, the risk of landslides increases. (mt)
