Police suspect that a 16-year-old boy killed last New Year's Eve in a car accident was actually deliberately murdered in an accident that appeared to be an innocent car accident. Today, the suspect, a 19-year-old man from Tel Aviv, was remanded in custody for four days. Police intend to arrest more suspects in the near future.

As mentioned, the incident took place at the end of September 2022, when a 16-year-old was run over and seriously injured in south Tel Aviv. He was transferred to Ichilov Hospital, where he died. At the beginning of the incident, the police believed it was a traffic accident and the case was handled by the Tel Aviv District Traffic Division, accompanied by traffic examiners. A suspect who was driving a vehicle without a license was arrested and released a few days later.

Over time, the suspicion that this was not a car accident but a deliberate incident intensified and crystallized, and the case was transferred to another unit for handling. The case is now being accompanied by the State Prosecutor's Office. Yesterday, the suspect was arrested and more arrests are expected, including of quite a few people involved, whether suspects or witnesses.

Today the suspect was brought to court, where a police representative said that "this is an unnecessary death of a 16-year-old boy, under the guise of a car accident and we believe that this is a planned event."

On the other hand, the suspect's defense attorney, Nir Alfassa of the Public Defender's Office, said that as early as January, the police suspected a suspected murder but that it was not urgent for them to arrest the suspects. "Not many things were thrown at my suspect. In any case, it does not sound like this is a suspect who is not the driver, who is a central figure in this incident even in the new format. I don't underestimate what was delivered. The manner in which they acted here does not give an indication that it is urgent to overturn the case that justifies an investigation that the suspect is in custody."

Judge Avital Amsalem, who extended the detention, noted in her decision that there is reasonable suspicion linking the suspect to the offenses attributed to him. "It should be noted that the suspicions against the suspect before me are not new, I learned from the investigation file that many actions were carried out even before the arrest and under the instructions of the State Prosecutor's Office. At this stage of the investigation, there are significant additional investigative actions to be carried out and are vulnerable to disruption.

"There are grounds for arrest of a dangerous type, but in my opinion the main reason for arrest is fear of disruption. At the same time, I believe that in light of the fact that this is an investigation that has been underway for a long time, it is appropriate to monitor its development more closely," the judge wrote in her decision.
