"Together with the entire House of Israel, its many students and those who cherish its memory, I mourn bitterly the departure of Maran the great Gaon, Rabbi Gershon Edelstein, zt"k"l, Rosh Yeshiva of Panevezys and President of the Council of Torah Gedolim of Degel HaTorah. Rabbi Zatzok"l was one division of Torah and fear of God, fought fiercely for the sanctity of Israel and the observance of the Sabbath, a remnant of a generation of opinion that had the privilege of providing tens of thousands of students and welcoming every person who welcomed him to advice and wisdom."

Miri Regev also eulogized the rabbi: "It is with deep pain that I received the news of the passing of Maran the Gaon, Rabbi Gershon Edelstein, one of the Jewish leadership giants of our generation. The rabbi's leadership, prayers and blessings have always been for the benefit of the general public. His approach and advice on issues on the national agenda have always been rooted in love and unity of Israel. I would like to share in the deep sorrow of many of the Jewish people in Israel and the Diaspora, who mourn his passing today. A great minister fell in Israel. May his memory be blessed!"

Rabbi Edelstein was a spiritual leader of enormous stature whose greatness in Torah and awe influenced our generation and will influence generations to come. His Torah-Jewish outlook, which found expression more than once in the educational principles he taught to many, saw the people and no less so the human being. This is a great loss to the yeshiva world and to the entire nation of Israel. Condolences to his family, students and loved ones. May his memory be blessed."
