Bathing trip with extended family: 23-year-old drowns in Lake Unterschleissheim

A 23-year-old drowned on the evening of Whit Monday in Lake Unterschleissheim. He was bathing with the whole family. The seven relatives were cared for by the crisis intervention team.

Unterschleißheim - On Whit Monday in the evening there was a tragic swimming accident at Lake Unterschleissheim. A father reported his 19-year-old son missing at 45:23 p.m. via an emergency call at the lake, reports the water rescue service. Major alarm.

Crisis intervention team looks after extended family

The young man's whole extended family was at the lake, parents, siblings, children; according to the fire brigade, Sudanese who have fled Ukraine. For the victim's family, a crisis intervention team was requested at the beginning of the operation to look after the relatives.

Large contingent including eight divers sets off in search

With the major alarm, the rescue forces of the water rescue service, DLRG, volunteer fire brigade, the rescue service and a helicopter were set in motion. They immediately began searching in and out of the water. A total of eight divers were deployed.

Around 20:45 p.m., an emergency doctor was able to determine only death

According to the water rescue service, the DLRG used its new hand-held sonar device "Aqua-Eye" to successfully locate the person under water, quite far out in the lake. Two divers from the Unterschleißheim volunteer fire brigade pulled the young man out. Unfortunately, however, any help came too late for the 23-year-old. Around 20:45 p.m., only death could be determined by an emergency doctor.

All emergency services were very affected, says Markus Brandstetter, commander of the Unterschleissheim fire brigade

"This operation has made all the rescue workers very affected, because the whole family was at the scene and we all feverishly tried to find the young man and save him," says Markus Brandstetter, commander of the Unterschleissheim volunteer fire department. The fire brigade was one of the first to arrive at the lake with 27 firefighters.

Water rescue warns: never swim long distances alone

The water rescue service appeals to all bathers to always observe the bathing rules. One of them is: "Never swim long distances alone." Circulatory problems or exhaustion can occur in people of any age group or physical fitness for different reasons. An accompanying person is able to call loudly for help in an emergency.
