Brazil's leftist president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, is hosting his South American counterparts in a lightning summit in Brasilia on Tuesday in an attempt to strengthen ties that had been loosened due to ideological differences and internal crises.

Only the President of Peru, Dina Boluarte, is missing. In total, eleven heads of state will meet in the Brazilian capital for the first meeting of its kind since 2014.

It had also been eight years since Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro visited Brazil. Lula on Monday described as "historic" the return to grace of the one who was persona non grata in Brasilia under the mandate of former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022). "Venezuela has always been an exceptional partner for Brazil. But because of the political situation and mistakes made, he spent eight years without coming to Brazil," Lula said Monday, after a tete-a-tete with Maduro, who said he was touched by the "warm welcome" received in Brasilia.

Relations between the two countries, which share more than 2000,<> km of land border, were non-existent under President Jair Bolsonaro, who called Venezuela's socialist regime a "dictatorship." "Today is the beginning of a new era in relations between our countries, between our peoples," said the Venezuelan president, who arrived Sunday evening in the Brazilian capital.

New Pink Wave

Tuesday's summit was imagined by Lula as a closed-door meeting, relatively informal, with no guarantee of a final declaration. During the meetings, the heads of state are to be accompanied by their foreign ministers and some advisers, for a "more relaxed" atmosphere, a Brazilian diplomatic source told AFP.

For Gisela Maria Figuereido, head of relations with Latin America and the Caribbean of the Brazilian government, the main objective is to "renew the dialogue" to find "a common vision" in areas such as health, infrastructure, energy, environment and the fight against organized crime.

The head of Brazilian diplomacy, Mauro Vieira, for example, last week revived the idea of a corridor between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, for the transport of goods by land.

The last meeting between South American presidents took place in 2014 in Quito, Ecuador, on the occasion of a summit of Unasur, created in 2008 by Lula and Venezuelan Hugo Chavez, during the first wave of left-wing governments in the meeting.

The subsequent conservative turn got the better of this union, and currently only seven of the 12 founding countries remain in Unasur, which Brazil and Argentina only rejoined this year.

But the new pink wave, with the recent elections of Lula in Brazil, Gabriel Boric in Chile and Gustavo Petro in Colombia has changed the situation, paving the way for a return to the scene of Maduro's Venezuela and a new impetus for cooperation between the countries of the region.
