The new pedestrian zone in Weißenburger Straße will not come in summer after all. The project is postponed - officially because of human resources. But there was also a lot of resentment.
Munich - The project to expand the pedestrian zone in Weißenburger Straße has been delayed. Originally, at the request of the Greens and SPD in the city council, cars were to be banned as early as this summer. However, the mobility department is now aiming for spring 2024 as the new date. In addition, it is planned to lock out the vehicles for one year on a trial basis. This has now been announced by speaker Georg Dunkel to the chairman of the Au-Haidhausen district committee (BA), Jörg Spengler.
New pedestrian zone in Weißenburger Straße: Mobility department wants to concentrate on other projects
According to Spengler, the reason why the project has to be postponed is that this year the mobility department wants to concentrate on the pedestrian zones in the valley and in Westenrieder Straße, which have also been decided. These projects would already tie up the already scarce human resources.
The delay could now also be used to respond to critics of the controversial project. There are concerns from both traders and some local residents. And at a citizens' meeting, a narrow majority even spoke out against the expansion of the pedestrian zone. "First of all, we need a reasonable participation of residents and businesses," says SPD leader Anne Hübner. "That's why we've been working to get the project postponed."

New pedestrian zone in Weißenburger Straße: "Implementing residents' ideas in the ongoing process"
Green Party leader Mona Fuchs also hopes to use the pilot project to try out different implementation options and test their suitability on site. "If we don't implement everything structurally right away, the residents' ideas can also be implemented in the ongoing process."
