The Eilat Municipality is initiating an innovative plan to cut it off from the National Electricity Authority, based on the city's eternal sun.

The municipality plans to undertake to supply the electricity to the residents independently and sell it to the residents, in order to reduce the high electricity costs in the city. That's according to the 2nd climate summit, which opened Tuesday afternoon in the city.

According to Assaf Admon, director of the municipal environmental unit, the municipality is trying to create a situation in which a solar field will be built in the city, which will be owned by the residents. The municipality intends to develop technologies for disconnecting public buildings from the national electricity grid and making them energy independent, thereby creating community resilience by making community centers disconnected from the electricity grid.

Meanwhile, the city aims to be a carbon-neutral city by 2030 and thus serve as a model for a low-emissions city.

Eli Lankri, mayor of Eilat, referred to the possibility that Eilat will sell electricity to the residents, saying that this is subject to regulation but this is the direction the city is heading: "Eilat will control all its electricity production, and will produce it with the help of the sun, and when that happens we will bring good news to the residents of the city.

"Today, anyone with a private roof generates energy and saves a lot of money, which is economical and clearly worthwhile. Now we will offer all residents of Eilat who do not have roofs or anyone who wants to be a partner in this huge project using the huge solar fields we will build. There are already 11 solar fields in the city, and there are roofs of public and private buildings, and we produce electricity for all of them. We are planning another field in the Eilot area, where we will share it with the residents."
