2023-05-30T03:17:16.969Z

Highlights: Work is underway in Brussels to implement the EU Green Deal. A new Ecodesign Directive is now also planned, which will affect every consumer. The aim of the directive is to establish a circular economy in the EU that significantly reduces the ecological footprint of the European Union. It is envisaged that gas, oil and electric boilers will have to disappear from the market from 2029. The situation could be similar for other products that do not meet the new requirements of the EU. The EU plans are currently still at the beginning of the legislative process.

Work is underway in Brussels to implement the EU Green Deal. A new Ecodesign Directive is now also planned, which will affect every consumer.

Brussels – It is not only in Germany that laws are being debated and passed to combat climate change. In Brussels, too, politicians are working on new drafts, but they are much less noticed in this country. A new ecodesign directive is currently being drafted to redefine which products are allowed on the European market.

EU Green Deal: Ecological footprint must be reduced

Accordingly, the EU considers it necessary "to move away from traditional models and revolutionize the way products are designed, manufactured, used and disposed of," according to the IPPEN draft. MEDIA.

In the future, the following points will be given special consideration in the manufacture of products:

  • Reusability
  • Retrofitting capability
  • Repairability
  • Recyclability
  • Minimal use of chemicals
  • Energy efficiency
  • Efficiency

EU heating ban in planning

It remains to be seen exactly what the realization of these goals will look like in everyday life. The EU plans are currently still at the beginning of the legislative process. However, it had already become known in April that the new Ecodesign Directive would play a role, especially when it comes to heating.

In line with the objectives described above, it is envisaged that gas, oil and electric boilers will have to disappear from the market from 2029. A drastic change – which has received little attention in Germany. The situation could be similar for other products that do not meet the new requirements of the EU.

Exemptions for foodstuffs & Co.

However, the regulation also lists exemptions that are not to be covered by the Ecodesign Directive. These are:

  • Food
  • Fodder
  • Medicinal products
  • Veterinary drug
  • Living plants, animals and microorganisms
  • Products of human origin
  • Products of plants and animals directly linked to their future reproduction

None of these products are to be affected by the new eco-TÜV.
