Tens of thousands are expected to attend the funeral of the leader of the Lithuanian stream in the ultra-Orthodox sector, Rabbi Gershon Edelstein, who passed away this morning at the age of 100. Rabbi Edelstein was president of the Council of Torah Gedolim of Degel HaTorah, one of the two factions that make up Torah Judaism, headed by MK Moshe Gafni. Edelstein also served as the head of the Panevezys Yeshiva in Bnei Brak, one of the most well-known and prominent yeshivas of the Lithuanians. Despite his age, he made sure to give his lesson to the students every week, often addressing current issues on the agenda.

Only recently did he ask his students not to enter into confrontations with the anti-judicial reform demonstrators who came to protest in the city. Until his last years, the rabbi maintained clarity, received an audience and decided on public issues. More than a year ago, he succeeded Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky and thus became the main leader of the Lithuanian-Haredi public. This followed four years in which he was Rabbi Kanievsky's "No. 2" and refused to publicly disagree with him on public and political matters, even though at times their opinions differed.

Rabbi Edelstein was known for not succumbing to dictates, and as a leader who dictated a different order of priorities than his predecessor. After his passing, the question arises as to who will take his place, and for years it has seemed that the Lithuanian public will not have a single "Maran" to fill the void, but rather a series of senior rabbis who will stand at the forefront of the spiritual and political leadership.

President Isaac Herzog eulogized Rabbi Edelstein. "He was a spiritual leader of enormous stature whose greatness in Torah and awe influenced our generation and will influence generations to come," he said, "His Torah-Jewish outlook, which found expression more than once in the educational principles that he taught to many, saw the people and no less so the person. This is a great loss to the yeshiva world and to the entire nation of Israel."

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu eulogized Edelstein and sent his condolences to his family. "Rabbi Edelstein was imbued with love of Israel for every person. His sensitive attention to the challenges of the generation led him to guide, guide, direct, strengthen and encourage. His lessons and compositions in the Talmud and Halakha gave expression to his tremendous diligence. His immense perseverance will continue to inspire those who hear his lesson."
