Millions of pensioners and insured persons receive mail: What the letter from the pension insurance means

2023-05-30T03:01:07.483Z

Highlights: The German Pension Insurance (DRV) is self-governing, just like the statutory health insurance funds. The DRV is considered to be the largest insurance company, into which millions of people pay. In 2023, voters can cast their votes until 31 May. Between 21 April and 3 May, eligible voters will receive their ballot papers. For pension insurance, the following lists are available for 2023:. For health insurance, there are different lists for the different insurance companies – you can find out about them on the website www.sozialwahl.de.

The German Pension Insurance regularly sends mail. Currently, however, a letter from the DRV flutters into the mailbox, which comes only once every six years. What does it mean?

Berlin – Once every six years, the German Pension Insurance sends a special letter to all insured persons and pensioners. The letter calls for the 2023 social election. 52 million people are eligible to vote. But what is it all about? We explain here why the social choice is important.

German Pension Insurance: Social parliaments are re-elected every six years

The German Pension Insurance (DRV) is self-governing, just like the statutory health insurance funds. This is done by voluntary social parliaments – in the case of the DRV this is the meeting of representatives, in the case of health insurance companies the boards of directors. The Assembly of Representatives of the DRV consists of 30 honorary members: 15 represent the insured, 15 the employers.

So the idea behind it is that anyone who pays contributions for their later pension should also have a right of co-determination. The social parliaments are re-elected every six years. In 2023, voters can cast their votes until 31 May. Between 21 April and 3 May, eligible voters will receive their ballot papers.

In 2023, a women's quota of 40 percent will apply for the first time. This means that at least 40 percent of the social parliaments must be made up of female representatives.

What do the social parliaments do?

The most important task of the Assembly of Representatives is the management of the budget. That is, they decide where the money goes. In addition, the assembly decides who sits on the board of the DRV.
