Rabbi Gershon Edelstein's condition worsened severely on Tuesday. The 100-year-old Edelstein, the leader of the Lithuanian public, is considered by many to be the most influential leader in the ultra-Orthodox public today.

On Thursday night, the rabbi was hospitalized at Mayanei Yeshua Hospital in Bnei Brak. The rabbi suffered from shortness of breath and experienced a decrease in his indices and was evacuated independently together with his associate and arrived at the hospital, where it was decided to admit him for further treatment and observation

Edelstein is president of the Council of Torah Gedolim of the Degel HaTorah movement, one of the two factions that make up Torah Judaism, headed by MK Moshe Gafni. Edelstein also serves as the head of the Panevezys Yeshiva in Bnei Brak, one of the most well-known and prominent yeshivas of the Lithuanians.

Recently, the rabbi urged his students not to enter into confrontations with the demonstrators against the legal reform who came to protest in the city. "We call on all dear yeshiva students to stay away from them and their crowds and not to enter into things with them under any circumstances, and God forbid to go out into the streets of a city and participate in any demonstration," the city said.
