Videos circulate on social media of angry customers destroying shelves or berating employees at Target stores in the United States. The reason for the outrage is the collection launched by the store on the occasion of LGBTQ pride. The backlash has led the company to remove certain items from the catalog, without specifying which ones. In another controversial move, the company has opted to rearrange items in the back of stores in the southern states.
The main point of controversy revolves around a swimsuit with a special design that provides extra fabric to supposedly accommodate male genitalia, and also offers a flattening effect on the chest, attributions that have been perceived as aimed at transsexual audiences. According to videos that circulated on networks, this costume was in the children's section, which aroused the indignation of a certain conservative sector.
However, some of the information was false. Kayla Castañeda, a representative of Target, specified that that suit was only offered in adult sizes, something that seems to be corroborated by other videos on social networks where shoppers show the product label. The swimsuit piece in the children's collection only has a label that states: "Designed to fit multiple body types and gender expressions."
