Highlights: After thousands accompanied the leader of the ultra-Orthodox Lithuanian community on his final journey, the question arises: Who will succeed the Torah leader? Like Shas, in this case, for the first time since the establishment of the state, there are several candidates for leadership. Names such as Rabbi Moshe Hillel Hirsch, Rabbi Dov Lando and Rabbi Baruch Mordechai Ezri are emerging as those who may now take center stage. But one thing is indisputable: the Lithuanian leadership has weakened since the death of its legendary leader, Rabbi Elachem Man.

After thousands accompanied Lithuanian ultra-Orthodox leader Rabbi Gershon Edelstein on his final journey on Tuesday, the question arises: Who will replace the Torah leader who left behind a huge void?

Rabbi Edelstein served as president of Degel HaTorah's Council of Torah Scholars, one of the factions that make up Torah Judaism, headed by MK Moshe Gafni. Similar to what has happened gradually with the Shas movement in recent years, in the case of Degel HaTorah, for the first time since the establishment of the state, there is no clear successor to the leadership of the ultra-Orthodox Lithuanian public, and the next leadership will probably consist of a front of a series of rabbis.

For most of his life, Rabbi Edelstein decided public and political issues alongside other leaders such as Rabbi Aharon Leib Shteinman and Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky, the Lithuanian rabbis who preceded him. More than a year ago, he became the only "Maran" and had the last word on these issues. The ultra-Orthodox MKs from the Lithuanian faction consulted with him on the composition of the government, the drafting of clauses in the draft law, and the budgets for haredi education. It is too early to determine, but it is believed that there will not be a single successor to replace Rabbi Edelstein.

Names such as those of Rabbi Moshe Hillel Hirsch, Rabbi Dov Lando and Rabbi Baruch Mordechai Ezri are emerging as those who may now take center stage. The rabbis are the heads of Lithuanian yeshivas, and are considered to have been active among the higher Torah class - Avrachim and yeshiva boys, and they do not have the same aura of "great generation" around them as their predecessors. They are considered more ultra-Orthodox, and one of the questions is whether, like Rabbi Edelstein, they knew how to preach moderation and the way of the land towards non-Haredim, and avoid confrontation with the state and its institutions.

The question of Rabbi Edelstein's successor depends not only on the greatness of one rabbi or another, but also on the political leadership, in this case MK Gafni. Also, in the Lithuanian journal "Yated Ne'eman". Those who receive more public attention will enjoy a more central place in the leadership, and even then they will probably have internal rivals with their own courts.

In the shadow of the fact that there is no single successor, the one who will naturally occupy a more central place is the Council of Torah Gedolim of the Degel HaTorah movement, the supreme spiritual authority of the party, which is composed of a series of senior rabbis in the Lithuanian-ultra-Orthodox community. But one thing is indisputable: the Lithuanian leadership has weakened since the death of its legendary leader, Rabbi Elazar Menachem Man Shech, and will probably weaken even now.
