"We have never forgotten you!": German pop legend suddenly a topic in the ESC final 2023

2023-05-31T03:34:32.951Z

Highlights: Vicky Leandros took part in the Eurovision Song Contest twice for Luxembourg. In 1967, still in her tender teens, she was able to take fourth place with "L'amour est bleu" And then again five years later, when she was even able to win for Luxembourg with "Après toi" The last time Luxembourg triumphed at the ESC was in 1983, after which things went downhill. The German-Greek pop legend, whose evergreen "I love life" rounds off every party, has spoken out again.

As soon as the ESC final 2023 had begun, there was already talk of a German pop legend. What's behind it?

Munich/Liverpool – The ESC has a long history. Each final has written its own story. Dominant winners, suspense until the end, dramatic points failures - basically the full range of the keyboard was and is given at the Eurovision Song Contest.

And yet it is often the little stories, the supposed marginal aspects, that have always made up the ESC. This was also the case at the 2023 ESC final, which was brilliantly opened by last year's winners from Ukraine, the Kalush Orchestra. As soon as the quartet of presenters around "Game of Thrones" star Hannah Waddingham had entered the stage, a German pop legend and ESC star should already be mentioned. But who – and why?

ESC final 2023 starts with greeting to German pop legend - "we have never forgotten you!"

Before the 26 acts were allowed to prove their skills in the ESC final 2023, they first took a look at the record winners of the European music competition. Lo and behold, Ireland is at the top with seven wins. They were closely followed by Sweden with six wins, who were to draw level with Loreen's second win at the end of the evening.

Third place should then be shared by three countries. The Netherlands, France – and Luxembourg. Yes, little Luxembourg has won the ESC five times so far. And this despite the fact that there has been no ESC participation since 1993 – which will change in 2024. Show host Graham Norton should explicitly point this out. Followed by this exclamation: "Vicky Leandros, we have never forgotten you!"

Vicky Leandros suddenly a topic of conversation in the ESC final 2023 - Schlager legend won Song Contest for Luxembourg

Luxembourg, Vicky Leandros, the ESC – how is that connected? Younger viewers and fans of the Eurovision Song Contest – which also includes Jan Böhmermann and Olli Schulz – may not know this. But the german-Greek pop legend, whose evergreen "I love life" rounds off every party, took part in the ESC twice for Luxembourg a long time ago.

In 1967, still in her tender teens, she was able to take fourth place with "L'amour est bleu". And then again five years later, when she was even able to win for Luxembourg with "Après toi". Incidentally, the last time Luxembourg triumphed at the ESC was in 1983, after which things went downhill.

German-Greek Vicky Leandros made ESC history with Luxembourg

Vicky Leandros has both German and Greek citizenship, and nevertheless took part in the ESC for Luxembourg. This was and is in line with the rules. After all, the musicians who compete for a country at the ESC do not have to be born in that country. However, in the early days of the traditional ESC, which has been held since 1956, it was mandatory for participants to sing in the respective national language.

Singer:Vicky Leandros
Born:23 August 1952 (age 70 years), Paleokastritsa, Greece
Spouse:Enno von Ruffin (m. 1986–2005), Ivan Zissiadis (m. 1982–1986)
Children:Sandra von Ruffin, Maximiliane von Ruffin, Leandros Zissiadis
Parents:Leo Leandros, Boubou Papathanassiou
Nominations:ECHO - Schlager Artist of the Year, ECHO - Artist Pop national

No problem for Vicky Leandros, who spoke French – and was therefore able to compete for Luxembourg. The aforementioned success speaks for itself. And reason enough for Graham Norton to pay tribute to and greet the pop legend at the 2023 ESC final. Meanwhile, another ESC legend has spoken out – and analysed Germany's renewed bankruptcy at the ESC. (han)
