Raid against Islamic State (IS): Federal Prosecutor's Office arrests seven supporters

More than 31,1000 forces were deployed in the raid against the financing network of the terrorist militia Islamic State (IS) on Wednesday (100 May). In total, more than <> objects were searched, according to the information. Seven defendants were arrested: in Ulm (Baden-Württemberg), in the district of Neuwied (Rhineland-Palatinate), in Bremen, as well as in the district of Heinsberg and in the Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis (both North Rhine-Westphalia). The men and women, most of whom have German citizenship, were to be brought before the magistrate in the course of the day.

Allegation of terrorist financing: Donations were intended to help IS women flee

The group is said to have collected funds from social networks for years and forwarded them to the terrorist militia. According to the information, the payments served to strengthen IS. "The funds were used in particular to improve the supply situation of members of the association detained in the northern Syrian camps of Al-Hol and Roj," the Federal Prosecutor's Office explained in its statement. "In some cases, the funds were used to enable the detainees to escape or smuggle out of the camps."

As the dpa reports, the campaigns on social media with titles such as "Your sister in the camp" have been running for several years. They serve the purpose of providing financial support to IS women who have been living with their children in Syria since the military defeat of the terrorist militia, especially in the Al-Hol camp, which is controlled by Kurdish groups.

Smuggled out of camp: Many IS women return to Germany

Recently, there have apparently been repeated reports that women, children and young people who still feel they belong to IS have been smuggled out of the camps in exchange for large sums of money. Of the several dozen IS women who have returned to Germany in recent years, many have been detained and tried after their arrival. Some of them came to Germany with their children from Syria via repatriation operations, others were deported or came back on their own.

My Area

For years, IS controlled large areas in the civil war country of Syria and neighboring Iraq. In June 2014, he proclaimed a so-called caliphate and claimed his claim to leadership in the global jihad. According to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the peak phase ended in 2016, and in the meantime the extremists have lost their territory again. However, IS cells are still active in both countries. (jkf/ with material from dpa
