If you have to go to the toilet particularly often, you may have just drunk a lot. In some cases, however, diseases can also be behind it.

Kassel – Adults should drink at least 1.5 litres of water per day, recommends the German Nutrition Society. This can sometimes be significantly more in summer temperatures or sporting activities. So it's no wonder that you often have to go to the toilet. However, frequent urination can also indicate diseases.

Increased urge to urinate: A disease does not always have to be present

How many trips to the toilet are actually normal per day? How often someone urinates varies from person to person and depending on the amount of fluid they consume. So there is no general answer to how often you should go to the toilet. The Department of Urology at the University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG) provides at least one guideline for this: If you drink around two liters of water a day, you excrete about 1.5 liters of water. With a normal capacity of the urinary bladder of about 400 to 500 milliliters, you have to go to the toilet three to four times a day.

However, if you have to go to the toilet more often than usual and also feel an increased urge to urinate at night, you may want to have the cause clarified by a doctor. There are many causes that can trigger pollakiuria – i.e. an increased urge to urinate.

However, a serious illness does not always have to be present. First of all, it should therefore be checked whether the frequent peeing is due to diuretic drinks such as coffee and alcohol or psychological causes such as anxiety or stress, the Alta Clinic informed on its website. Even during pregnancy, expectant mothers often feel an increased urge to urinate.

Do you need to go to the bathroom frequently? That could be the reason

According to the UMG, pollakiuria can also be accompanied by other symptoms, such as pain when urinating, blood in the urine or a weakening of the urine stream. According to the Alta Clinic, these diseases can be hidden behind this, among others:

  • Urinary tract infections
  • Urinary stone disorders
  • Irritable bladder
  • Diseases of the prostate gland
  • Foreign bodies or tumors in the area of the urinary bladder
  • Consequences of bladder surgery or radiation exposure
  • Urinary incontinence

If you need to go to the toilet particularly often: You should pay attention to these warning signs

In combination with a strong feeling of thirst, frequent urge to urinate can also indicate diabetes, reported the Austrian journal MeinMed. Anyone who also notices tingling in the legs, fatigue and lack of concentration should have this clarified by a doctor. This is because diabetics are exposed to an increased risk of tumours and cancer. According to the journal MSD Manual, inflammation of the kidneys can also cause people to go to the toilet excessively often.

Basically, just because they have to go to the toilet frequently does not necessarily indicate a disease. However, it becomes alarming when an increased urge to urinate occurs in combination with other symptoms, MeinMed wrote. According to the UMG, a medical clarification is then necessary, "since non-treatment of the cause can result in a worsening of the symptoms and the underlying disease". Suddenly, however, those affected should not drink less under any circumstances, as this in turn promotes other diseases.

Researchers recently made visible what happens when flushing in the toilet. A study showed how dangerous germs are stirred up. The toilet can be cleaned with a simple trick. (kas)
