Eon supplies 12 million households in Germany with electricity and more than 2 million households with natural gas. Germany's largest energy supplier Eon announces a long-awaited price reduction for electricity and gas for its customers. Special contracts should also benefit.

Munich – After the significant price increases, which have caused resentment nationwide in recent months thanks to the energy crisis, Germany's largest energy supplier Eon is now announcing that it will reduce electricity and gas prices again in late summer. This will relieve the burden on millions of customers, as the company announced on Wednesday (31 May) in Munich.

Eon CEO Filip Thon explains: "We will reduce the energy prices for millions of our Eon electricity and gas customers by late summer, by an average of 18 percent in the basic supply of electricity and 28 percent in the basic supply of gas." With this move, the company is delivering on its promise to use the leeway for price reductions as soon as it is given, Thon said. In addition to Eon customers in the basic service, those with special contracts are also likely to be prepared for falling prices.

Energy price reduction for electricity and gas: Eon announces relief for customers

At the height of the energy crisis, Eon benefited from a "long-term purchasing strategy" and was thus able to dampen historically high market prices. In the meantime, the declining trends in the wholesale trade have fortunately also solidified, which now also benefits the company's customer base.

The price reductions are planned before the start of the heating season on September 1, 2023, especially in numerous basic supply areas. They "don't have to worry about anything and don't have to take action themselves" – they will "of course be informed several weeks in advance as usual," the company explains.

Energy crisis was instructive – Eon boss names date for price reduction

"The energy crisis has taught us all how quickly and unexpectedly markets can change," says Filip Thon. The associated responsibility for consumers and markets is taken seriously. Eon supplies 12 million households in Germany with electricity and more than 2 million households with natural gas.

In the wake of the energy crisis, the prices for district heating had also risen to astronomical heights. According to consumer advocates, millions of households in Germany are faced with completely exorbitant costs. This also applies to Eon customers, who are threatened with drastic additional payments of up to 3000 euros. Only recently, consumer advocates had therefore filed a model lawsuit to support affected customers with excessive advance payments. (na)
