Regardless of Habeck's heating plans, a number of heating systems will have to be replaced next year. What homeowners should know about this.
Munich – Regardless of when and in what form the planned heating law comes into force, thousands of property owners are already faced with the question of how to keep their houses and apartments warm in the future. Because next year, hundreds of thousands of oil and gas heating systems will have to be replaced for reasons of age. Around four million oil and gas heating systems will then be 30 years old. Although a good half of them have comparatively efficient low-temperature boilers and are therefore allowed to continue running, and a further 860,000 oil and 630,000 gas heating systems do not have to be removed until there is a change of ownership – but for around half a million boilers, it is over.
And now? The consumer portal Finanztip has drawn up a roadmap on how to proceed. The most important tips at a glance:
Heating system replacement: When does the fossil heating system have to be removed?
Don't panic – because not every fossil heating system will have to be replaced until 2045. So if the heater still works, you don't have to replace it with a more climate-friendly device next year, no matter how old it is. Unless it is an old constant temperature boiler. You can also have the heater repaired. Only if this is no longer possible will it have to be replaced with a climate-friendly heating system three years later. However, there should be high subsidies for this: 30 to 50 percent are in it. Alternatively, you can also deduct the costs from your taxes.

Quickly buy oil or gas heating: Why it's not a good idea
No quick purchase: Many people are now thinking of quickly buying a new gas or oil heating system because it will last until 2045 and you don't have to buy a much more expensive heat pump. Finanztip doesn't think that's a good idea. This is because the high prices for heat pumps will fall because manufacturers will expand their production. And besides, the CO2 price continues to rise. This means that the annual costs in a single-family house with average consumption increase by several hundred euros for oil or gas heating. Electricity, on the other hand, could become significantly cheaper, as the electricity tax is to be reduced – with a heat pump you would benefit from this.
Taking stock: Before you make a decision, according to Finanztip, you should analyze your situation carefully: What reserves are there? What is the condition of the heating system and property?
Energy consulting can help with heating decisions
Consulting: Many solutions are conceivable. Sometimes it actually makes sense to install a new gas heating system, sometimes a heat pump can also be used well in old buildings. Therefore, one should seek advice before making a decision. A good and inexpensive first point of contact is the energy advice of the consumer advice center or a qualified energy efficiency expert (can be found, for example, in the list of the German Energy Agency).

Talking to the family: Especially for older people, the expensive switch to a climate-friendly heating system is often difficult to manage. If you are over 80, you can therefore continue to install a new and cheaper gas heating system in any case. But: Imagine grandma has just had a new gas boiler installed, dies unexpectedly and you inherit the house. Then you pay practically twice as a family. This is because the new law stipulates that from 2024 onwards, a climate-friendly heating system must be installed no later than two years after a change of ownership! Maybe that's why they act together right away - and still use grandma's support, because over 80-year-olds get much more support.
