The head of state said Tuesday in the Council of Ministers that it was not necessary to fight the far right "by moral arguments", distancing himself from his Prime Minister who had recalled Sunday that the National Rally was the "heir of Petain".
For the Insoumise president of the Finance Committee, Eric Coquerel, this statement by the tenant of the Élysée reflects a "trivialization of the ideas of the RN". "Emmanuel Macron has been making the government's policy for some time: he trivializes the ideas of the RN. "I can't help but think that Emmanuel Macron has been sending signals for some time, taking up the words of Charles Maurras [far-right writer], rehabilitating Pétain in a way. And if you decide that the RN becomes frequentable, why no alliance with it? " he wondered again.

This reframing is also not unanimous on the right. The boss of the LR deputies, Olivier Marleix, denounced the "cynicism" of the head of state, recalling that he had been "elected and re-elected" by calling to "block the far right". "Without this demonization, he would not be president of the Republic," he said on Wednesday, recalling that Emmanuel Macron was elected in 2017 and 2022 against Marine Le Pen in the second round with the support of voters who wanted to prevent the RN from accessing the Elysee.

For its part, the National Rally deplored the remarks of Elisabeth Borne, demanding through the voice of its president, Jordan Bardella, an apology. "When you are Prime Minister of the French Republic, you do not behave like a gang leader," criticized the RN official on RTL on Wednesday, speaking of "pitiful" and "extremely serious" remarks, which "manipulate the history of France to smear a political party (...) which rallied 42% of the French in the last presidential election".
