Netflix: the deactivation of account sharing will begin in the coming days

2023-05-31T17:33:14.227Z

Highlights: French Netflix users will soon be forced to pay for their accounts. Users in the United States, France and a hundred other countries will no longer have the opportunity to share their accounts for free. Deactivations will not follow a logic of region, seniority or regular use. The American entertainment giant expects a mood movement of subscribers with a one-off leak followed by growth over the coming months once the fever subsides. The company wanted to give time to the owners of the accounts to clean up the devices that benefited from free accounts.

The platform will very soon implement its policy of restricting the sharing of accounts outside the subscriber's main household.

If you were to take advantage of a subscriber's Netflix account, you'll soon find yourself faced with a "Narcos" dilemma: pay or be deactivated. The Californian company had announced last week that users in the United States, France and a hundred other countries would no longer have the opportunity to share their accounts for free. It only remained to know when the cleaver would fall.

Instead of the beginning of the month when a subscription begins, as this Thursday, June 1st, the American platform has confirmed to us that French "borrowers" will be gradually deprived of free access in the next few days. Deactivations will not follow a logic of region, seniority or regular use. But they will materialize in the space of a few weeks.

Paying account owners will first be asked shortly to set their Netflix household, i.e. the TV or devices in the main profile. To avoid any blocking on the move, Netflix had already specified that household members must connect to the Wi-Fi network owned by the account owner and watch at least one content per month.

Algorithms to detect users

If this main and sovereign profile is not defined, this will be done promptly and automatically. An additional way - along with the IP and Mac addresses of the devices - to spot out-of-home profiles that don't pay the monthly bill. The algorithms will then take action and contact other users with an alert message on their screen that offers them to subscribe under the different formulas.

Netflix does not give a specific date. Asked by Le Parisien about the delay between the announcement and the effective end of shared accounts, the company explains that it wanted to give time to the owners of the accounts to clean up the devices that benefited from free accounts or to contract the subscription at 5.99 euros for an additional profile.
