Munich – Bears are currently increasingly in the headlines because they attack either humans or animals. Recently, an animal killed 16 sheep in the Austrian-Bavarian border area, and a jogger was fatally injured by a bear in northern Italy. From Greece, on the other hand, there is good news to report about bears.

Bear cubs are trapped in irrigation canal - mother tries in vain to save them

In the northwest of the country, three bear cubs were in dire straits on Thursday (May 25). The boys got lost in an irrigation canal near the village of Florina in northern Greece and couldn't get out. In a video you can see how the mother bear tries in vain to save her cubs. When she discovers her offspring in the canal, she initially stands on the parapet for a long time. Meanwhile, the bears try to climb up the wall. Then the bear jumps down and looks for a way to get out of the canal. But in vain.

The video was recorded by hunters, who eventually alerted the Greek bear conservation organization "Arcturos". In Greece, bears are not uncommon in the wild; unlike in Germany. Recently, more bears have been spotted in Upper Bavaria.

Happy ending for lost bear cubs: animal rights activists rescue cubs from sewer

Experts were finally able to free the bear family from their predicament. As they got the little bears out of the canal, the mother watched from a distance, the animal rights activists told the German Press Agency. "Then the bears ran into the forest," said Arcturos spokesman Panos Stefanou.

A beautiful story with a happy ending. To prevent something like this from happening again, the animal rights activists set wooden pallets in the canal on which stray animals can climb up. On the other hand, the excursion of a bear in Austria, which had been found dead on railway tracks, did not end well. Meanwhile, an autopsy confirmed how the animal died. (mt)
