Fire and rescue fighters rescued nine puppies from a forest fire near Al Hilal Hospital in Jerusalem's Mount of Olives neighborhood on Tuesday. The fighters trying to extinguish the large fire heard the faint howls of dogs coming from the fire, and located them trapped in the fire in smoke, seconds before the fire approached them.
The fire endangered the hospital and nearby neighborhood homes. "We were dispatched to extinguish a forest and thorn fire in the Mount of Olives neighborhood," said Fadel Allan, commander at the Egoz station who commanded the incident. "A fire that endangered the local hospital and neighborhood homes. We quickly arrived at the scene, spread out around the fire, and carried out extinguishing operations, which managed to contain the fire front so that it would not approach the hospital and the neighborhood."

Allan spoke about the rescue operations. "During the firefighting operations, one of the firefighters approached me and said he heard the sounds of puppies howling. We followed the howling and saw several puppies trapped in a ring of fire when they were alone, after apparently their mother had run away because of the fire. The firefighters immediately jumped into the flames, crossed them, and reached the small cubs. Immediately afterwards, we treated the puppies, gave them drink, and later transferred them to the Jerusalem Municipality Veterinary Service. I'm glad we were able to save the lives of the little puppies and prevent them from being burned alive."
