Berlin - The heating dispute in the traffic light coalition now threatens to become a media meat grinder for all three parties: Most recently, the FDP was caught in the crossfire because of a presumed buckling in the associated "heat plan". The party denied it. What is clear, however, is that it has long been a matter of saving face.
The FDP parliamentary group now wants to remain correspondingly tough: This was stated by its parliamentary secretary Stephan Thomae on Wednesday (31 May) at the request of Merkur.de. The insistence of the Greens and the SPD for a quick agreement before the summer break could make the FDP roll off. "For us, the further schedule depends solely on the content," Thomae emphasized with a view to the Heating Act. At the same time, he hinted at displeasure with atmospheric upsets in recent weeks.
Habeck's heating law: "The FDP will not be put under pressure"
The meeting between the Minister of Economics and Heating Act architect Robert Habeck and the experts of the traffic light parliamentarians on Tuesday was "a step in the right direction," said Thomae. "Because we are discussing the matter again and talking about the central problems." Conversely, this has not always been the case from the point of view of the liberals.

However, the Bavarian FDP politician did not reveal in more detail which of the 77 FDP "questions" to Habeck is suffering from an agreement. "We want climate protection to be a success in the building sector as well," he explained.

"The FDP does not allow itself to be put under pressure," said Thomae, however, also with a view to other points of contention such as the budget cornerstones, which have been postponed several times, or the National Security Strategy, which is also lagging behind schedule. This course applies "fundamentally and especially to all critical points": "It's not about making laws as quickly as possible, but about making laws that are as good as possible."

However, the parliamentary secretary of the Bundestag liberals left no doubt between the lines that debates have also been unpleasantly escalated by the FDP's point of view. Thomae's verdict and demand: "It's not good when debates are emotional. Even in challenging times, we have to keep a cool head and talk about problems in a factual and fact-oriented manner."
There are likely to be some opportunities for this in the coming weeks. FDP parliamentary group deputy Christoph Meyer said on Wednesday that many questions remain unanswered in the heating law. And the pressure on the traffic light is also growing on other issues: social and youth associations as well as trade unions accused the coalition on the same day, for example, of "stagnation" in the basic child benefit.
