China unveiled a type of tube-launched suicide drone that has innovative flight performance and can be carried by land and sea platforms, providing greater stealth and flexibility in missions, experts said.
China introduced a type of tube-launched suicide drone (China's Northwestern Polytechnical University).
The long-endurance folding wing drone launched by a Peregrine tube, developed by a team led by Chang Min at Northwestern Polytechnic University in northwest China's Shaanxi province, successfully conducted a test recently, the university announced in a press release.
It is a new type of marauding precision-guided weapon that has become popular in recent years. The tube-launched folding wing drone uses an integrated storage, transport and launch system that provides portability and flexibility, but this feature also restricts the size of the wings.
The new system
To break this threshold, Chang's team used design technology that causes the wings to fold twice into the tube instead of once, providing a significantly higher lift-to-drag ratio while maintaining structural integrity.
China successfully conducted a test with the drone (China's Northwestern Polytechnical University).
The team also made a breakthrough in launching on a turbulent water surface, with the Peregrine drone performing China's first deep-sea launch and vertical cold launch in flight tests on the water surface, the university said.
Suicide drones, capable of both reconnaissance and attack, can be carried and operated by individual soldiers or carried by vehicles and vessels in large numbers, experts said.
