Highlights: After the summer days at Pentecost, there is a risk of forest fires, especially in northeastern Germany. But what happens next? Weather models predict both heat and cold. Germany is currently experiencing the longest, sunny, dry and, above all, warmest weather phase in 2023 so far. While the south experienced many wet periods in May, less rain fell in the north and east – in some cases up to 80 percent less than usual in May. The extreme drought is a breeding ground for forest fires.

After the summer days at Pentecost, there is a risk of forest fires, especially in northeastern Germany. But what happens next? Weather models predict both heat and cold.

Munich – Pentecost has given Germany its first summer moments. The long weekend brought bright sunshine, without any rain. Best barbecue, bathing and excursion weather. This is unlikely to change for the entire week of Pentecost. Meteorologist Dominik Jung sums up the coming days as "dry, sunny and warm" for wetter.net. That's what you like to hear after the many gloomy days in May.

But what comes next? Experts are already warning of drought and forest fires in view of the first heat wave this year. According to the American weather model, the sheep cold is actually just around the corner. So what now: heat or cold?

June weather in Germany: Expert warns of the risk of forest fires – especially affected by Brandenburg

According to weather expert Jung, Germany is currently experiencing the longest, sunny, dry and, above all, warmest weather phase in 2023 so far. In view of the extreme weather in Spain and Italy this spring, the question arises as to what happens next. While the south experienced many wet periods in May, less rain fell, especially in the north and east – in some cases up to 80 percent less than usual in May. "Drought is increasingly becoming a problem, especially in the north and east," says Jung. The UFZ Drought Monitor shows the second highest to highest level here.

The extreme drought is a breeding ground for forest fires. The DVD forest fire danger index is also at the second highest level, with varying intensity, especially for Brandenburg. On Wednesday, the day with the highest temperatures, the risk of forest fires for the entire state is at level four out of five.

Overview of the last days of May (according to the German Weather Service):

  • Whit Monday, May 29: 16 - 27 degrees; dry and sunny – north: cloudier; South: light showers and thunderstorms
  • Tuesday, May 30: 17 - 25 degrees; sunny and dry – north/west: cloudy for a longer period of time; South: slight chance of showers
  • Wednesday, May 31: 22 - 27 degrees; sunny and dry
  • First days of June: 17 - 27 degrees, dry and sunny – a little cooler in the north, scattered showers in the Alps

June weather in Germany: Weather model predicts sheep cold – when should it hit Germany?

The English weather model also predicted hot, humid weather for Germany. In the course of June, muggy days and summer thunderstorms are expected to await, reports wetter.com. On the other hand, it looked and looks different in the American model. According to these calculations, Germany should hit a low-pressure area from the Atlantic. The result: a cold air intrusion and night frost as early as Whit Monday – the so-called sheep cold.

The fact that Germany is hitting the cold front so early, weather expert Jung no longer sees. Currently, the high-pressure area Vera over Great Britain is protecting us from the cold air. From mid-June, however, the typical weather phenomenon could actually strike. Currently, the weather model calculates a cold snap from 7 June. "We'll have to wait and see," says Jung. The cold snap at Pentecost has also been completely postponed. And finally, there is "still a lot of time" until mid-June. Time to enjoy the sunny days to the fullest. In Italy, the first summer weather has a devastating effect. Heavy rain and a new wave of flooding have been announced, while residents are still struggling with the consequences of the last masses of rain. (chd)
