170,000 neighbors pending 42 votes: the mayor of Alcorcón is decided in the electoral board

2023-06-01T20:02:35.346Z

Highlights: The PP, winner on 28-M with a difference of 11,654 votes over the PSOE, seeks the votes that are missing to add with Vox against the left. Until then, the future of 170,000 residents will hang by a thread, those of Alcorcón, one of the five large cities of the red belt of the region. "We were the most voted political force and doubled the results achieved in 2019. Whatever happens, what has been achieved has been a success," says Antonio González Terol.

The PP, winner on 28-M with a difference of 11,654 votes over the PSOE, seeks the votes that are missing to add with Vox against the left

The popular candidate for Mayor of Alcorcón, Antonio González Terol, intervenes in a meeting with affiliates and supporters, at the Teatro Centro Cívico, on May 23, 2023, in Alcorcón, Madrid (Spain).

In the midst of the euphoric celebration in which the board of directors of the PP of Madrid becomes on Tuesday, Isabel Díaz Ayuso orders to stop, mentions Antonio González Terol, his candidate in Alcorcón, which with 170,000 inhabitants is the seventh most populated city in the Community, and launches a resounding message.

"Terol has been the first, it has won in Alcorcón", recalls the regional president on a victory in principle insufficient, because the block of the right (PP + Vox) has one councilor less than that of the left (PSOE + Win Alcorcón + More Madrid) despite the difference of 11,654 votes achieved by the conservatives (first force) against the Socialists (second). "And let's see, let's see," Ayuso repeats, "because the result is still to be known, I think they don't know the intensity of Antonio's work, who is going to be there at the foot of the exit to make sure that everything is counted and recounted as it should be." And he closes: "There is still much to do there."

Exit poll? But wasn't there a vote on Sunday? And yes, the vote was on Sunday, but the PP calculates that it has been 42 votes away from getting the seat that would allow it to reach an absolute majority with Vox, thus surpassing the sum of PSOE, Ganar Alcorcón and Más Madrid. And that is why this Friday, five days after the elections, will displace to the Electoral Board of Madrid to José Antonio Martínez Páramo, the councilor of the luck of José Luis Martínez-Almeida, one who occupied the number 29 of the capital's electoral list, marking the absolute majority, and who is also his specialist in electoral litigation. Its mission is to try to find in the final count that will be held that day the votes that the PP lacks to take one of the bastions of the left. Until then, therefore, the future of 170,000 residents will hang by a thread, those of Alcorcón, one of the five large cities of the red belt of the region.

"We were the most voted political force and doubled the results achieved in 2019. Whatever happens, what has been achieved has been a success, "Terol explained in his social networks to celebrate the eleven councilors achieved on 28M by the PP, by the eight of the PSOE, the four of Ganar Alcorcón, the two of Vox and the two of Más Madrid. He added: "Although we are going to ask for the review of the null votes and we are studying all the minutes of the polling stations, I want to congratulate all those political parties that obtained representation in our municipality."

What is the PP looking for? Páramo, who has been its representative before the body that regulates the elections since 2019, knows that in the municipal elections of Alcorcón there have been 1,006 votes declared null, and that some can be reconsidered as valid. Also, that in the tally sheets of each table there may be some badly counted vote. That in the dump of those minutes to the computer system there may have been an error. And that there may be bags to open of postal vote, or temporary residents abroad, corresponding to Alcorcón. Among all these options will seek fifty votes, always knowing that the rest of the parties will try the same so that the current situation is maintained even if the PP manages to add some new support.

"But 39% of the electorate has voted for the PP, and 26% for the PSOE, so if that trend and that proportion in the count continues, it may happen that it will be overturned," argues a source familiar with the process.

The tension, therefore, is maximum. The PSOE, and its candidate, Candelaria Testa, have preferred not to attend this newspaper. On May 29, one day after the examination of the ballot boxes, the candidate left this statement. "Alcorcón resists. We have managed to keep the left bloc in the city," he said. And on the PP, and its commitment to review the votes in the electoral board, he added: "Far from assuming the results with a democratic spirit and respect, it seems that it has been installed in denying the evidence and, above all, respecting the decision in freedom taken by the neighbors of Alcorcón ".

In Ganar Alcorcón, the platform of Jesús Santos, who until now has co-governed the city with the Socialists, they are clear: "The PP has very few, very, very few options."

But there they are. And that is why in Alcorcón, a fiefdom of the left, everyone waits for Friday, lest there be a turnaround again. Because on Sunday, with 99.40% of the votes counted, Terol was the mayor of Alcorcón, and the PP celebrated a triumph that right now is of the left.
