President Alberto Fernández, who participated between Monday and Tuesday along with other leaders of the meeting of leaders of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), is among the leaders of the region with the worst image, according to a ranking made during the last two months.

Fernández appears in third place among the heads of state of Latin America with the greatest negative image, only surpassed by the Ecuadorian Guillermo Lasso – who comes from dissolving Parliament and calling new elections – and the Peruvian Dina Boluarte, who assumed after the dismissal of Pedro Castillo, in the midst of a strong political crisis in that country.

The data is part of the monitoring report of the last two months (March and April) carried out by the Legislative Directory Foundation, which compiles surveys of 100 consultants from 18 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. Only those who have a minimum of three measurements from at least two different sources enter the ranking.

Lasso shows an 83% negative image. The Ecuadorian dissolved the National Assembly this month while an impeachment process against him that could culminate in his dismissal proceeds. He applied a constitutional tool of his country called "cross death."

In second place is the Peruvian Diana Boluarte with 75% rejection. Boluarte faces accusations for the dozens of deaths that occurred in his country during anti-government protests that took place between December and March.

Behind them is Alberto Fernández with 73% negative image. The president, who has already announced that he will not seek re-election in this election year, is going through a complicated end of management, with his power weakened, reserve crisis and record inflation.

The report even shows the profound deterioration experienced by the president's image since his inauguration in December 2019. Between January and February 2020, its positive image was 55% and far exceeded the negative image of 31%. That preference grew and peaked in March and April of the same year, when the pandemic began. Fernandez at that time reached the peak of 80% positive image.

However, between measures considered ill-advised and the photos of the "Fiesta de Olivos", it quickly began to fall and the trend, in decline, remained since then month by month.

He is followed in negative image by the Chilean Gabriel Boric with 62% and the Colombian Gustavo Petro (47%).

Presidents with the best image

In contrast, the Mexican Andrés Manuel López Obrador ranks as the president with the best image with 60% approval. He has held the position since last year and is the only one with a more positive than negative image.

Brazilian Ignacio Lula Da Silva, who took office four months ago, is second with 50% approval despite the fact that the beginning of the administration was marked by conflicts with the armed forces, the Central Bank and Congress.

Bolivian Luis Arce was third with 41% positive image, a place he shares with Petro. Although as mentioned above, the Colombian has more negative than positive image, as does Boric who ranks fifth with 30% positive.

Below 20% of good image are only Alberto Fernández (19%), Dina Boluarte (17%) and Guillermo Lasso (16%).

From the Legislative Directory they highlight as a phenomenon the growth in the number of presidents with less than 25% approval.
