The mountain rescue service had to move out three times on Whit Sunday and help mountaineers in need. The spokesman is annoyed by the expectations.
Ramsau near Berchtesgaden – The sunny weather at the weekend also attracted many mountaineers to the Berchtesgaden Alps. However, this also led to three complex and risky operations on Sunday, May 28, as several people needed help and rescue. The spokesman for the mountain rescue service, Michael Renner, is quite annoyed about the accompanying expectations.
Dramatic rescue operations in the Berchtesgaden Alps – couple from North Rhine-Westphalia needs help
The Berchtesgadener Land district association of the Bavarian Red Cross had the heaviest operation around 14 p.m. According to a press release from the BRK, a 37-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman from North Rhine-Westphalia made an emergency call – the couple had climbed into the "still very wintry Watzmann crossing between the central and southern tip" and had gotten into mountain distress.
According to the BRK, the following operation was risky and difficult, mainly because of the dense fog and clouds, which made air rescue almost impossible. But thanks to a "masterpiece of flying by the police helicopter pilot", who first dropped off mountain rescuers and equipment and then quickly took advantage of a favorable gap in the clouds, the holidaymakers were finally rescued. Two helicopters had been used for this purpose, mountain rescuers mastered the ascent including heavy equipment - but the couple was quite unimpressed by the complicated and, above all, risky rescue.

Couple from North Rhine-Westphalia complains about treatment – after risky rescue operation
In order to keep warm in the sub-zero temperatures, the couple from North Rhine-Westphalia only had a thin sleeping bag for the hut with them. When the helicopter pilot took advantage of the momentarily favorable cloud gap to rescue the two people in distress, they were asked by the ground team to leave their equipment behind. Back on the ground, the couple from North Rhine-Westphalia was rather grumpy. According to the press release, they expressed "that they had never been treated so badly as patients" and immediately disappeared.
Mountain rescue spokesman Michael Renner is angry about this. "In such highly dynamic situations, we often have to make decisions very quickly and sometimes speak quite directly with those affected, who are not always able to realistically assess the explosive nature of the situation and the high risk for everyone involved; a sleeping bag left behind is disproportionate to the life and health of people!" They don't want to overestimate this, as those affected may react differently in such exceptional situations than they would otherwise do – but they are a bit irritated because they just want to help.
Two more missions on Sunday: mountain rescue spokesman "increasingly surprised"
Even before the difficult and risky rescue of the NRW couple, the mountain rescue service had to move out twice. At 13 p.m., a 53-year-old Berliner needed help because he had "sustained a deep cut on his knee" on the "Hochkalter," according to the press release of the Berchtesgadener Land district association. And at 10.15 a.m., the emergency services rescued a 51-year-old hiker from the district of Rosenheim, who "had collapsed with cardiac arrest on the Wachterlsteig on the east side of the Reiter Alm." She was immediately given emergency medical care and then flown by helicopter to the Bad Reichenhall district hospital.

Finally, mountain rescue spokesman Renner is frustrated with the attitude of the people towards the rescue operations. "We are increasingly astonished by the dangerous expectation, which seems to be becoming more and more established, that rescue in the high mountains in wind and weather would be both a guaranteed and a non-critical thing."
