One of the biggest games of the year is going to be Spider-Man 2. It was revealed to us in all its glory at Sony's Showcase last week and gave us a glimpse of the gameplay that awaits us. The sharp-eyed noticed that this time we would play two Spider-Mans: Peter Parker and Miles Morales. But the part revealed to us takes part in a plot mission, and many wondered how character switching mechanics would work in an open-world game. Well, the developers have the answer.
"When you play the main storyline, we decide for you when you can switch between Peter and Miles. It serves the story," explained Brian Inheter, creative director of the game at Insomiac. But when players spend their time in the open world outside of missions, they'll have the ability to switch between the two Spider-Mans at the touch of a button. And this will happen immediately and without unnecessary charging, thanks to the "power of the PlayStation 5 console".
The mechanics are very reminiscent of GTA V. There, too, players could choose between 3 characters at any given moment (Michael, Franklin and Trevor), and during plot missions the game chose for the players the moments that would alternate between the different protagonists. And just like with GTA V, each Spider-Man will have different activities and challenges to offer as side content in the open world.
That's not all. The game will offer 3 different skill tree scales: one for Peter, one for Miles, and one shared by both. Inter promises gameplay will feel familiar, but different. Given that Peter will be under the influence of the game's symbiote, it's also safe to expect that each of the Spider-Mans will have different abilities and battle styles.
Spider-Man 2 will be released exclusively for PlayStation and doesn't have a launch date yet, but Sony is still committing to the fall period of 2023.
