Ellmau – Since the very first episode of "Der Bergdoktor" was broadcast on February 06, 2008, the Heimatserie has become a veritable flagship for ZDF. Today, millions of viewers tune in to new stories from the Wilder Kaiser region – but Mark Keller (58) and Hans Sigl (53) did not initially expect such a long-term success.

"Nobody knew where the journey was going": Mark Keller looks back on the early years of "Bergdoktor"

Today, every ZDF viewer knows Hans Sigl and Mark Keller as the faces of "The Mountain Doctor". In 2024, new adventures of Dr. Martin Gruber and his best friend Dr. Alexander Kahnweiler will finally flicker across the screens - the two series doctors had not expected at all that they would one day shoot for the 17th season of their series.

In an interview with "Webtalkshow", Mark Keller talks about his early days at the "Bergdoktor" and explains that he and Hans Sigl had not thought that the ZDF format would run for more than ten years. "Hans was also very young and for him it was the first big leading role after 'SOKO Kitzbühel' (...)," recalls the "Alarm for Cobra 11" star, "None of us knew where the journey was going and that it would ever be such a success."

Hans Sigl's secret guest role in "Der Bergdoktor"

Since 2008, Hans Sigl has embodied the title hero Martin Gruber in "Der Bergdoktor". The exciting life of the country doctor inspires millions of loyal fans with every episode and has made his actor one of the biggest stars of the German television landscape. But what very few people know is that the role as Lisbeth Gruber's son is not Hans Sigl's first appearance as a mountain doctor. Ten years before he slipped into the white doctor's coat, he was already seen as a taxi driver in the popular series, which was still running on Sat.1 at the time and which focused on Gerhard Lippert, a completely different mountain doctor. Who knows – maybe one day an extra from the ZDF remake will be Hans Sigl's successor?

"Portion of luck is part of it": Mark Keller talks about the success of "The Mountain Doctor"

At first, they may not have believed in the popularity of "Bergdoktor", which has lasted for more than 15 years, but today Mark Keller and Hans Sigl can record one success after another with the rousing series. "It also takes a bit of luck that the team is right, that the chemistry among the actors is right, that the director is right, that it all grooves together," explains the family man.
