A fatal accident occurred on the A3 near Aschaffenburg on Wednesday evening. A helicopter that was called in was then also damaged while unable to fly.
Aschaffenburg – Tragic accident on the motorway near Aschaffenburg: On the A3, a tanker truck driver hit a semitrailer truck in front. The man lost his life in the process. A rescue helicopter called to the accident was hit by a fire engine.
Fatal accident in Bavaria – rescue helicopter unable to fly
Late on Wednesday evening, May 31, the Lower Franconia police headquarters reported a serious accident that occurred on the A3 near Aschaffenburg at around 20:30 p.m. According to the press release of the officials, a tanker truck driver had hit "a semi-trailer truck at the end of a traffic jam". The 51-year-old was trapped in his driver's cab, causing him serious injuries. He succumbed to this before the ambulance came, the latter could only determine the death of the man.

According to police, a rescue helicopter was also called to the scene of the accident. He landed on the road, but was then hit by a fire engine. The helicopter was damaged at the rotor and could no longer fly. According to the press release, the helicopter then had to be laboriously transported away by low-loader and taken to a shipyard.

Long closure of the highway – police investigate
In the meantime, the Aschaffenburg traffic police have taken over the investigation into the cause of the accident. An expert is to support them. For the duration of the accident recording and the removal of the flightless rescue helicopter, the highway had to be closed in both directions.
