New cycle path ends on busy B2 – State building authority rejects blame

2023-06-01T06:21:19.488Z

Highlights: Cyclists who are unfamiliar with the area ride the path to the end - and end before B2. Office for Rural Development wanted to dissolve two dirt roads on the other side of the road at the same time and unite them into one. Building the cycle path, which was completed last year, in two stages would have been economically nonsensical. The cycle path to nowhere could remain for a while – it could remain quite quite a while for it could be quite a long way away from completion.

For more than a year, a freshly built cycle path has ended in the middle of nowhere, worse: directly on the busy B 2. The Weilheim State Building Authority rejects all blame – someone else is actually responsible.

District – If you have left the Ettingen depression behind you on the main road from Weilheim in the direction of Murnau, you will see the new, approximately 200-metre-long cycle path on the right along the gravel pit and further along the edge of the forest, which the State Building Authority completed last year in spring. It is intended to close an important gap in the cycle path network, which is popular with everyday and recreational cyclists, as Andreas Lenker from the State Building Authority said last year.

Because if you want to go from Eberfing in the direction of Huglfing, you usually pass this place, but it is not without danger. Until now, cyclists not only had to cross the B 2, but also drive about 50 meters uphill on the main road. This has been over since last year, thanks to the cycle path, the road only has to be crossed.

Because the Office for Rural Development wanted to dissolve two dirt roads on the other side of the road at the same time and unite them into one, the building authority led the cycle path to the point where the future cycle path was to meet the B 2 on the other side. The problem: The Office for Rural Development, which had hoped for a start of construction last autumn, has not yet done anything.

This is not a problem for cyclists in the direction of Huglfing, they stay on the path and benefit from the previous expansion. In the opposite direction, however, it happens again and again to cyclists who are unfamiliar with the area that they ride the new cycle path to the end, which ends at the B 2 - and stare at the meadow opposite. Either they fight their way cross-country cursing, or they turn around, drive back 150 meters uphill and cross there. That's why the building authority first set up a small barrier last year and quickly replaced it with a larger one, because apparently cyclists kept passing into the cul-de-sac.

Weilheim is powerless – proceedings will drag on for a while

"There are complaints about it," confirms Lenker exasperated, and readers have already called the local newspaper. But Lenker is powerless – building the cycle path, which was completed last year, in two stages would have been economically nonsensical. Who could have guessed that the Office for Rural Development would take so long?

In fact, the project could take even longer, as an inquiry revealed: "The planning of the remaining path expansion in Etting as part of the land reorganization was finally coordinated with the public authorities in spring 2023," the office said in writing. "Due to the special requirements imposed by two water protection areas located in Etting, the approval of the measures has been delayed."

In a next step, the community of participants will now conclude the cost agreement with the municipality for some construction phases to be implemented together. "Implementation planning and awarding of contracts are to be completed promptly after the agreements have been reached. We ask for your understanding that we cannot give a specific date," the letter concludes. The cycle path to nowhere – so it could remain for quite a while.
