(ANSA) - NORCIA (PERUGIA), JUNE 01 - Mayors and administrators of Umbria met in Piazza San Benedetto, in Norcia, to "huddle around" the mayor Nicola Alemanno suspended following a sentence of one year and ten months of imprisonment for abuse of office, with the interdiction for the duration of the sentence, linked to the story of a small house temporary headquarters of the proloco after the earthquake of 2016. A demonstration promoted by the regional ANCI "to ask the government and parliament to intervene with absolute speed".
"We are here to be close to Alemanno - said the regional president of the association of municipalities Michele Toniaccini - but above all to ask for the revision of the Severino law. The mayors do not want immunity or special treatment, but respect. The mayor is the only institutional figure who is suspended with a conviction at first instance in trials which, as we know, in 97% of cases do not reach a final judgment. We want respect and clear rules but above all to be able to work well and defend our communities". For Toniaccini "the mayor is targeted and accused for whatever happens".
Alemanno spoke of "many colleagues from all over Umbria and of every political color" arrived in Norcia "for a simple gesture". "To be here close to me - he added - to testify how complicated this norm is and how urgent it is to go and change it. A hug that they wanted to dedicate to me to recognize the work done together. I will embrace them all one by one."
The mayor, suspended, said he was particularly bitter about "having the awareness of knowing everything that has been done and having to leave so suddenly". "Just at the moment when - concluded Alemanno - we were pulling the strings of what has been done in these four years after the earthquake".
