Wolf in the Hautes-Alpes: breeders hold their first meetings

2023-06-01T17:16:15.468Z

Highlights: The number of wolves in France has increased by 114 per cent in the last five years. The number of wolf attacks in France is now at its highest level since the start of the 20th century. In response to the increase in wolf attacks, the French government has introduced new measures to combat the problem. These measures include the creation of a new breed of wolf known as a ‘wolf wolf’. The new breed will be able to live in the wild without fear of being attacked by other wolves.

DECRYPTION - In five years, the presence of the canid has increased by 114% in France. The number of sheep killed has soared.

Faced with the increase in wolf attacks on their herds, 150 farmers from the France Agriculture Council (CAF), bringing together all the families of sheep, cattle and equine farming of the FNSEA as well as the Young Farmers (JA) and the Chambers of Agriculture, are mobilizing. They organize, these Thursday and Friday, the first Assises de la prédation, in Chorges, in one of the three French departments most affected by the aggressions of the canid: the Hautes-Alpes.

However, distinguished guests will miss the appointment. On the executive side, only the prefect referent wolves, Jean-Paul Celet, will be present. The Minister of Agriculture, Marc Fesneau, opened this symposium at the end of the afternoon, but by video from Brussels. His colleague at the Ecological Transition, Bérangère Couillard, played the Arlesiennes to decline any participation. This greatly annoys farmers.

"We understand the absence of the Minister of Agriculture, detained in Brussels," comments Arnaud Rousseau from Chorges.
