New details were revealed Friday about the final days, and period immediately following the suicide, of millionaire, businessman and convicted serial sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. About 4,000 documents obtained by The Associated Press reveal details of the man's troubled mental state in the days before he took his own life.

According to the documents, obtained as part of a Freedom of Information Act request by the news agency, Epstein repeatedly complained that he was having trouble adjusting to life behind bars while being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan, which was closed in 2021 following exposure of serious irregularities there. Epstein was detained at the scene awaiting trial on several counts of sex trafficking and sex crimes.

According to the documents, Epstein sat in his cell for hours with his hands over his ears and made humming noises in an attempt to eliminate the noise of the toilet dripping in his cell. After the first suicide attempt, he was placed under special observation and told the therapist that he was a "terrible coward", however he said he would not harm himself because "I have a wonderful life, it would be madness to end it".

The documents also revealed that Epstein wrote a letter to Dr. Larry Nassar, a doctor for the U.S. gymnastics team who was convicted of pedophilia. The letter was returned to send without being opened and its contents are unknown to the news agency. It was also revealed that the prison suspected that the media was bribing employees at the facility to find out details about Epstein's condition.

The documents also show that on the night of his suicide, he canceled a meeting with his lawyers, saying he wanted to devote his free time to talking to his family. He told one of the guards that he was going to talk to his mother, who had been dead for 15 years. Epstein took his own life on the night of August 10, 2019.

After the suicide, a major investigation into the conduct of the facility's employees was conducted and it was discovered that the two employees responsible for protecting Epstein lied when they claimed to have carried out the necessary checks. As mentioned, the facility was closed in 2021 after serious deficiencies were discovered at all levels of its operation.
