CO2 emissions: La Rochelle ready to become super zero!

2023-06-02T09:11:59.877Z

Highlights: The agglomeration of La Rochelle (Charente-Maritime) is launching a challenge: to become super null in... carbon. The idea? Emit as little CO2 as possible to meet the objectives of the Paris Climate Agreement. The region that intends to achieve neutrality by 2040 would currently release 36,000 tons of carbon every week. An online carbon meter will show the quantities of CO2 emitted and their evolution while informing participants about the scope of their efforts. Ten volunteers agreed to participate in the operation "1 month without my car".

The La Rochelle region is organising a week of activities to raise awareness of reducing CO2 emissions.

From Monday, June 5 and for seven days, the agglomeration of La Rochelle (Charente-Maritime) is launching a challenge: to become super null in... carbon. The idea? Emit as little CO2 as possible to meet the objectives of the Paris Climate Agreement. The La Rochelle territory that intends to achieve neutrality by 2040 would currently release 36,000 tons of carbon every week.

His challenge? Subtract 1,600 tons in less than seven days by relying on all the goodwill! "We must arrive at a society of sobriety. This super null – but great – week will raise awareness among the people of La Rochelle, "pleads Jean-François Fountaine, the mayor and president of the agglomeration. Some thirty partners have imagined more than 60 meetings, workshops, visits, conferences or challenges to achieve this collective goal. An online carbon meter will show the quantities of CO2 emitted and their evolution while informing participants about the scope of their efforts. Ten volunteers agreed to participate in the operation "1 month without my car".

The challenge: leave the car in the garage!

By June 30, these randomly selected people will have to do without their personal vehicle as much as possible to emit less carbon. "To facilitate their approach," says the agglomeration, they will have free access to the bus network or self-service bicycles and electric cars. Among these volunteers: Élodie, 32 years old, living in Puilboreau. "I live near my two children's school and my job. My partner and I were already thinking about abandoning our second car. This is your chance to try! »

Only downside, explains the thirty-year-old: "I need the right equipment to transport the children, and it is expensive". Aged 49, Pierre already used a bicycle regularly to complement his vehicle. This challenge will be an opportunity for this Rochelais to pedal even more: "A sacrifice? No, on the contrary, bikes are easier to access the city center and I will save money! Godmother of this super zero carbon week, sailor and scientist Isabelle Autissier offers her advice to limit its impact: "The solution is to start with anything, but we like it! No more cycling, less harmful household products or meat, it doesn't matter! But we realize that it's nice, that it feels good and that it's possible! »
