Several businesses in Florida participated in the strike 'A Day Without Migrants' organized by immigrant groups to protest against new laws imposed by the government of Ron DeSantis. The measure focuses on penalizing undocumented workers and their employers.
SB1718 was passed earlier this month. It requires all businesses with more than 25 employees to use the E-Verify system to verify that their workers have legal permission to stay in the United States. It also prohibits local governments from giving funds to organizations that give identification cards to migrants and invalidates the driver's licenses of undocumented migrants, even if they have been issued in another state.
Immigrants make up a significant portion of Florida's agriculture, tourism and construction industries and have pointed to the new measures as discriminatory. DeSantis has made border policy one of the pillars of his campaign to compete for the Republican nomination for president heading into 2024.
