The Dutchman Max Verstappen (Red Bull), leader of the championship, was the fastest this Friday in the first free practice for the Spanish Grand Prix, the seventh of the Formula 1 World Championship, which takes place at the Montmeló circuit (Barcelona); where the locals Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) and Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) scored the sixth and ninth time, respectively.

In the best of his 31 laps, Verstappen covered the 4,675 meters of the Circuit de Catalunya track in one minute, fourteen seconds and 606 thousandths, 768 less than his teammate, the Mexican Sergio Pérez, who is second in the World Championship, 39 points from the 144 with which he leads 'Mad Max' -which aims for a third consecutive title-, who spun the same times as the Dutchman and, like him, set his best time on the soft tyre.

The Frenchman Esteban Ocon (Alpine), who finished in that position last Sunday in Monaco, signed the third time – eight tenths – of a session that ran without major incidents and in which everyone achieved their best times with the soft compound.

Alonso, who comes from being second in Monaco and who seeks his 33rd victory in F1 -ten years after his thirty-second, in this same scenario-, was registered sixth in the time table of a session that concluded with 25 degrees Celsius ambient and 42 in the cement; and with the overcast sky, with clouds that threaten rain.

The double Asturian world champion – third in the championship and the great sensation of the start of the season, with five podiums in the first six races, at the age of 41 – repeated 24 times the track on which he also won in 2006; and was nine tenths of the record of 'Mad Max', which leads him by 51 points in the contest.

Sainz finished ninth. The talented Madrid driver, who aims to achieve in Montmeló his first podium of a season that did not start as Ferrari would have wished, spun 27 times; and in his best lap he was one second and one tenth behind his first teammate in F1 (in 2015 and aboard a Toro Rosso, current Alpha Tauri).

The second free practice will be played from 12 noon.
