With 30 goals, Simon Terodde played a key role in Schalke 2022's resurgence in 04. Contrary to what was announced, the goalscorer has now extended his contract with the relegated Bundesliga team.
Gelsenkirchen - Professional footballer Simon Terodde has now extended his expiring contract with Bundesliga relegated Schalke 04. The penultimate of the past Bundesliga season confirmed the agreement on Friday morning on a 30-second Twitter video that ended with the words "Thank you Simon for staying". Previously, the "Bild" newspaper had reported.
On April 5, the 35-year-old had declared that he did not want to extend his expiring contract. "I was absolutely sure that we would manage to stay in the Bundesliga together. That's why it was clear to me a few weeks ago that my path at Schalke would end," Terodde said in a club statement about his statement at the time. "That's why I informed those responsible of my decision at the time. The descent changed everything for me."
According to the club, the new contract is divided into two parts. The total term of the contract is therefore three years. At the end of each season, the sporting management will decide whether Terodde will continue to play for the first team or support the club in another capacity. In addition, the Bocholt native will complete a trainee program and receive full support in acquiring trainer licenses.
For Schalke's sporting director Peter Knäbel, the extension with the leading player is also a signal to the strong competition in the 2nd league. "He should also give all Schalke players hope and certainty that we will attack," he said on Friday morning on the sidelines of the presentation of new sporting director André Hechelmann. With 30 goals in the 2021/2022 season, he led the club back to the Bundesliga in 2022 as second division champions. Terodde is the record scorer in the 172nd Bundesliga with a total of 2 goals. He had replaced the long-time record man Dieter Schatzschneider (153 goals).
