Margit Carstensen is dead. The actress died at the age of 83, an illness apparently bothered her for many years.

Munich – The film world mourns the loss of actress Margit Carstensen. She died on Thursday (1 June) at the age of 83 in a hospital in Heide (Schleswig-Holstein), her agent said on Friday (2 June), citing the family. She is best known for her roles in the productions of director Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Carstensen also performed at numerous theaters.

Actress Margit Carstensen is dead: Illness bothered her

After Austrian Helmut Berger, Marvel star Ray Stevenson and "Toni Erdmann" actor Peter Simonischek, Carstensen isthe next great actress to leave us within a few weeks.

For many years, Carstensen lived in seclusion in a small village near Heide (Schleswig-Holstein). She had not been able to take on any roles for a long time because she was in poor health. For years, the heavy smoker suffered from pulmonary emphysema, which made it difficult for her to breathe. Pulmonary emphysema is a chronic progressive lung disease. However, nothing is currently known about the cause of death.

Martha actress Carstensen was also considered one of Fassbinder's muses

The Martha actress in the feature film of the same name alongside Karlheinz Böhm was also considered one of Fassbinder's muses. Tall, slender and fragile, Margit Carstensen often played enigmatic and mysterious women. She also worked with Christoph Schlingensief (1960-2010) for many years, in whose film "100 Years of Adolf Hitler - The Last Hour in the Führerbunker" (1989) she played Magda Goebbels and in whose media parody "Terror 2000" (1992) she played a detective.

Carstensen grew up in Kiel. After studying acting at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg, she played on various stages, and from 1965 to 1969 Carstensen was a member of the ensemble of the Hamburg Schauspielhaus. In 1969 she moved to Bremen, where she met the charismatic playwright and filmmaker Rainer Werner Fassbinder (1945-1982). Together with director Leander Haußmann, she shot the ex-GDR comedy "Sonnenallee" (1999).

In 2016 she was still seen in the "Tatort - What it is worth living for" on television. In addition to Eva Mattes as Inspector Klara Blum, she played Irm Hermann and Hanna Schygulla, a curious trio of old ladies who became murderers for moral and ethical reasons.

Carstensen has been awarded numerous prizes. For her performance in The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant (1973) she received the Filmband in Gold and the Bavarian Film Award (2002). In 1973 she was voted Best Actress of the Year by German film critics. She received the Götz George Prize for her life's work in 2019.
