Russian President Vladimir Putin could probably retreat further: drone attacks on Moscow are apparently causing fear in the Kremlin.

Moscow – In the face of new drone attacks on Moscow with damaged buildings and some injured, nervousness is rising in Russia's capital. Not only the citizens, but also the Russian elite are said to no longer feel safe – even President Vladimir Putin.

According to sources close to the Kremlin, both the attacks on Russian territory and the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court are intended to ensure that Putin does not leave the country for the time being. This is reported, among other things, by the independent portal Verstka. Meanwhile, Ukrainian military intelligence is openly claiming Putin as a target for killing.

President Putin apparently feels anxious and insecure after drone strikes

Apparently, the president does not feel safe enough, including because of the recent drone strikes on Moscow, and is trying to minimize the risks for himself. "In any case, this is the idea that is being spread on the fringes of the Kremlin," Verstka quotes the source as saying. There is no sense of security for the president.

As reported by The Moscow Times, at the time of the latest drone strikes on Moscow, Putin was reportedly at his Novo-Ogaryovo estate in the Krylatskoye district, about 30 kilometers west of the Kremlin. Drones were also shot down a few minutes away from there. A source close to the Kremlin reports that the security service is said to have informed the president about the downing early Tuesday morning. Whether Putin's residence was the target of the attacks is unclear.

Putin Ukraine's goal? "We're trying to kill him"

Vadim Skibitsky, deputy head of Ukraine's military intelligence, recently said in an interview with Die Welt: "Putin is at the top of the list. We're trying to kill him." The president is the one in the Ukraine war who "coordinates and decides what happens". Putin notices that "we are getting closer and closer to him." Or maybe he's afraid of "being killed by his own people."

Putin now apparently no longer dares to go abroad because of the arrest warrant from The Hague. Russian state media reported on Wednesday (31/05/2023) that Putin would not attend the inauguration of the re-elected Turkish President Erdoğan. Instead, Vyacheslav Volodin, speaker of the State Duma, is scheduled to travel to Ankara.

Putin in fear after drone strikes? Russian president no longer wants to travel abroad

A summit meeting of the "Shanghai Cooperation Organization", which is to be attended by Putin and China's President Xi Jinping, among others, will no longer take place in New Delhi as planned, but virtually. Officially, the organizers speak of difficulties in planning.

The Hindu portal speculates that the switch could be related to Putin's reluctance to travel abroad. "If Putin does not travel to India, then of course it is because of the arrest warrant," a senior source in the Russian parliament reportedly told Verstka. Drone strikes would also play a role. The president has "no sense of security" anymore, it is said. The Kremlin would try to minimize any risks for Putin.

Wagner boss Prigozhin and Putin's bloodhound apparently also on the kill list

A meeting of the BRICS countries in South Africa next August could also be dicey for Putin. The South African opposition is increasing pressure on the government to arrest the Russian president if he enters the country. The government announced that it would grant "immunity" to all participants.

But not only Putin is on the kill list: Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the Wagner Group, and the Russian ultra-nationalist Igor Girkin are also in the sights of the Ukrainian secret services, according to Skibitsky. Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and "Putin's bloodhound" Ramzan Kadyrov would also have to "answer for their deeds." Oligarchs from Russia, who produce weapons or co-finance the war, would also be among the enemies. According to international conventions, they are "a legitimate target," Skibitsky said. (LRG)
