MK Simcha Rothman snatches a megaphone from a protester in New York June 3, 2023 (Shani Granot-Lubton)
After snatching a megaphone from a protester last Friday in New York, the chairman of the Constitution, Law and Flotilla Committee, MK Simcha Rotman, posted on his Facebook account on Sunday morning that he was "attacked" by a "small group of violent demonstrators" who cursed him and wished him "death wishes."
"A small group of violent protesters attacked me and my wife as we were walking late at night in New York City," Rothman wrote. "They blocked our way, stepped on my wife Hannah's leg and cursed, including wishes for death. The security guards called the police, described to them where we were, and kept walking, ignoring the demonstrators. At some point, the demonstrators realized that we weren't excited about them, and then they held a megaphone to our ear and shouted."
"Both the security guards and I kept telling them to stop and move away, and they continued," he said. After all the warnings, I took the megaphone she pushed into my ear without touching it, of course. After about half a block, we got to a place where we could go in and wait for the police. The police escorted me to the hotel, and the incident was over."
Rothman added: "The violent attackers came from Israel. Just as in Israel they represent a small and violent group, so too here. It is permissible to demonstrate, it is forbidden to physically assault and harass Knesset members."
Later, the Knesset member continued to attack opposition leader Yair Lapid and state camp chairman Benny Gantz for failing to condemn what he called "violent attacks on Knesset members." "The fact that Yair Lapid and Benny Gantz do not condemn the violent attacks on Knesset members, and even encourage them, testifies more than anything else that they have become an opposition to the state."
